Adding Soft-Close to Existing Drawers: Every Retrofit Option Compared

Soft-close is standard in new kitchens, but what about the furniture you already own? There are four ways to retrofit quiet closing, and they differ a lot in price, effort, and in what they actually solve.

Option 1: Replace the slides with soft-close slides

The classic route for drawers: remove the existing slides and fit soft-close ones. The result feels like a new kitchen, but there is real work involved: matching length and type (side-mount, undermount, telescopic), removing and refitting each drawer, and often drilling new holes. Hardware runs roughly $15-50 per drawer; with a handyman, $40-100 per drawer. A six-drawer chest adds up fast.

Option 2: External dampers

A small piston mounted on the cabinet body that the door or drawer meets at the end of its travel. Cheap ($3-10 each) and it softens the slam, but it does not pull anything closed, and on light doors a weak push can leave the door resting ajar against it. Best for light cabinet doors.

Option 3: Soft-close hinges for doors

Swap existing cup hinges for ones with a built-in damper. Works nicely for cabinet doors, usually needs only a screwdriver ($8-15 per hinge, two per door). Irrelevant for drawers. Check the hinge overlay type (full, half, inset) before buying.

Option 4: Automatic closers (the new category)

All three options above share one limit: they help only when someone already pushes the drawer or door. If it was left open, it stays open. The fourth approach solves exactly that. AutoClose, a product we are developing, is a small unit that sticks inside the drawer or on the door in thirty seconds, no tools, no drilling, and closes it by itself a few seconds after each opening. It is an add-on rather than replacement hardware, so it works on rentals and on furniture with no standard slides at all.

How to choose: if the slam is what bothers you, go slides or hinges. If what bothers you is drawers standing open all day, no damper will help; that is the automatic-closer case.
