Drawer Won't Close All the Way? Fix It in Five Steps

A drawer that stops a centimeter short, sticks halfway or bounces back almost always has one of five causes. Work through them in order; most take ten minutes and nothing more than a screwdriver.

Step 1: Something fell behind the drawer (the most common cause)

Pull the drawer all the way out and, if possible, remove it completely (most slides release with a full pull and a slight lift, or a plastic tab on each slide). Look and feel behind: a spoon that dropped from the drawer above, a lid, a rolling bottle. The telltale sign: the drawer stops at exactly the same point every time.

Step 2: Loose screws on the slides

Check the screws fastening the slides to both the cabinet and the drawer. One loose screw lets the slide sit at an angle, and the drawer binds mid-travel. Tighten everything. If a screw hole is stripped and the screw spins freely, move the slide slightly to a fresh hole or use a thicker screw.

Step 3: Worn rollers or bearings

Old roller slides (the white ones with a plastic wheel at the end) crack and wear, making the drawer squeak and jam. On telescopic ball-bearing slides, the balls sometimes escape the cage. In both cases the honest fix is replacing the pair of slides: cheap (from around $10-20 for standard ones), twenty minutes with a screwdriver. Measure the old slide's length before buying.

Step 4: Overload and a sagging bottom

An overloaded drawer bows its bottom panel downward; the sagging bottom drags on the frame and stops the travel. Empty half the contents and test: if it now glides, the load was the problem. Permanent fix: a thicker bottom panel (4-6 mm) cut to size at any hardware store.

Step 5: Humidity and swollen wood

In solid wood or MDF furniture near moisture (kitchen, bathroom), fronts and sides swell and rub. The sign: worse in winter or after showers. Find the shiny rub mark on the wood and sand it lightly.

Still stuck? Stops at the same point every time: revisit steps 1-2. Heavy and squeaky through the whole travel: step 3. Only when full: step 4.

And the most common case of all: the drawer is fine, nobody closes it

In most homes the drawers work perfectly and still stand open all day, because busy hands do not close drawers. No screwdriver fixes that, and it is exactly why we are building AutoClose: a small unit that sticks inside the drawer (no tools, no drilling, rental-friendly) and quietly closes it by itself a few seconds after each opening, stopping immediately on any resistance.
